So tempting! And that's why it's so freaking dangerous.

One hilariously over-engineered Volkswagen isn't enough for you?

Yup. I'm kinda' looking at one of these myself to replace my car. They are, however, turning up as high mileage vehicles. I'm not so sure about the reliability of VWs from this era.

Do not be tempted. Try replacing a power steering hose, or even the belt in reasonable time. They do rip though.

Tell me about it. I've thought about it a lot. It would be worth it, right? Especially if you throw a nice, mild exhaust on.

Just keep in mind the W8 model is a maintenance monster. The only way to replace the O2 sensor is the pull the entire engine. Obviously, that's not cheap.

W8 - the prices will keep dropping.

Was looking at one of these the same time I bought my 9-3. The reliability issues turned me off, but man do they fly, and such a sleeper feel too

That's one of my fears. V10 TDI has similar maintenance sinkhole issues.

I like this one...

But it's a sea of GREY. Why do carmakers do this? You create a kickass car that people really want to jump on, but you make it possible to have a completely monochrome color scheme other than Vader black. Wh.. Why??

Buy a 1.8T. Then turbocharge to hell and back. Simmer to ~300hp. Serve at speed with 4mo and a manual transmission.

Do it. I have a w8 wagon sport as my daily driver, 125k miles. If you're comfortable around the shop the maintenance isn't awful, and getting to the front of the engine isnt nearly as bad as people say. You just have to get a bit creative. For example, the whole front end slides to maintenance position in under 10 minutes with a hand drill and the right bits. Putting it back takes the same amount of time with the torque clutch on the drill set right. The only problem is the cost of ownership. An oil change is $90+ even if you do it yourself (9 qts mobil 1!), transmission/power steering fluid is $20/qt, and it sucks premium at 18mpg. Most of the parts are interchangeable with the rest of the b5 platform, so availabilty generally isn't an issue. I've had mine for almost a year now, and aboslutely love it. Driven it from Michigan to NY and back stuffed with gear no problem, and incredibly comfortable the whole way. Also took it out to a track for a few laps, and everything just feels right. Heavy, but right.

My oil change is even worse. $150 for the Phaeton V8. Thankfully it doesn't need it very often.

Is that really the only way? Not doubting, I never went near one, just wondering because of a chat I was having with someone on here the other day about how we really haven't got used to all the new tech available yet when it comes to working on cars. You can buy a half-decent fibre-optic snake-camera for $20 or so - or maybe you could just use a webcam or something - so if the problem is just being unable to see what you're doing, it might be easier than people realise. Flexi-drive socket-wrenches exist, too.

Well, compared to a Phaeton the w8 will be easy. I thought about getting one, but the passat came in a wagon, and only cost me $5000.

Yeah, 1.8t cars have plenty of problems, can't imagine having to deal with a W8 car. You would live at the dealership.

Eh, no. Double VR4 is not what I'd be going towards. Double VR6? I could be convinced (A8 W12)
If one must have a VW product, I'd rather have an A6 4.2, or preferably an A8.
If you must have a manual, I'd rather hunt a 540i or an M5.

It's the only way VW will approve the work. That's not the only absurd example of maintenance costs or restrictions on the car, either. When they were originally sold, the only vehicles from Volkswagen with higher maintenance costs were the 12 cylinder Phaetons and the 10 cylinder TDI Touaregs.
It's a fantastic highway cruiser, but you'll see economy under 10mpg in town, and it's not a nice handler at all.

"It's the only way VW will approve the work. "
Does that matter? I wouldn't expect to be replacing an O2 sensor (except under warranty) before the car was at the kind of age where people stop worrying about having a full dealer service history.
On top of the maintenance issues, the reason there are almost none left in the UK is that the road tax alone is now £500 a year on one of those (and of course petrol costs a fortune).

I was mostly thinking about warranty issues, but you're right that they're all old enough that it doesn't matter as much.
I'd still be very cautious about getting into one without a full garage to work on it, knowing how hard even simple things are on that car. Maybe it's different on your side of the pond, but here, it's a nightmare.

I agree that the W8 4motion is one you'd expect to be a nightmare. One that is a maintenance nightmare. Not arguing there at all.
What I was trying to say is that something occurred to me the other day about how we're not using modern tech to fix our cars yet.
I was wondering if what was an engine-out job might now be an engine-in job with the aid of a cheap(ish) camera and a flexiwrench, for example. I was asking because I've never done the job, so I wasn't sure if it's an access issue, or that you need to remove the engine to have room to remove the sensor.
